W.MS- Gone Fishin'

During one tennis fortnight of the year, the middle Sunday is fun day...

Well, I don't *actually* fish, buy you get the idea.

=MIDDLE SUNDAY NOTES=
...just a few Sunday afternoon ITF tip-ins on Wimbledon's off day.

The winner of the biggest challenger event of the week was Ukraine's Kateryna Kozlova, who won the $60K clay court event in Rome, defeating Colombian Mariana Duque 7-6(6)/6-4 to claim her first singles title since 2014.

Elsewhere, Naomi Osaka's older sister, 21-year old Mari, reached her second 2017 challenger singles final. She's still looking for her first career title, though. Sunday in Denain, France, she fell in a 3rd set tie-break (arrrrgh!) to Macedonia's Lina Gjorcheska, 6-2/5-7/7-6(6).

Also, Arantxa Rus won the $25K Middelburg, NED crown, defeating Greece's Valentini Grammatikopoulou, while 21-year old Eudice Chong (Texas Wesleyan) defeated Zhang Ling to claim her first pro title in the all-Hong Kong final in the $25K Anning, China event.

But, of course, the big news is that Vera Zvonareva claimed her first singles title of any kind since 2011 (her last ITF title came in 2002), winning a 2:58 clash with Tereza Mihalikova in the $15K Sharm El Sheikh final, winning 1-6/7-6(4)/7-5. Three events into her comeback, the Russian will climb into the Top 800.

Any update on Potapova?

Stat of the Day-1-The amount of women who have won a slam before being seeded in the Open Era.

Relevant because Azarenka is still alive here, and she represents the type of woman who wins when unseeded, similar to Clijsters(USO 09), or Serena(AO 07), in which a former high achieving player comes back. But didn't Ostapenko just do this? No, as she snuck in as the 32nd seed at the 2016 French. For the record, Rybarikova has been seeded 29th at a slam, Martic is the only one who hasn't.

But Ostapenko was the first since Barbara Jordan(79 AO) to have her first title be a slam. Was it her? No, as she was seeded 5th there.

Before I give you the answer, lets take a look at two who came tantalizingly close. As usual, if there is a statistical anomaly, it involves a Williams, and in this case Venus. In 1997, Venus reached the US Open final in her 3rd major. Something that grows more impressive by the day. The twist is that she played so little, and had had such limited success, that by the end of the year, she only reached 22, and even with the final, since there were only 16 seeds at the time, was actually unseeded at her next slam. The 98 AO, in which after facing unseeded Alexia Dechaume-Balleret, managed to face 3 more unseeded players-Serena, Mauresmo, and Schnyder. Then lost to the first seed she faced in Davenport.

The other tale probably wouldn't happen today. As Williams/Capriati was the impetus for replay, this might have been for the ranking system. Chris Evert reached the USO SF in her first slam in 1971. That is impressive, but the questionable treatment comes here. She actually reached the SF in her first 3 slams, the 2nd of which was the 1972 Wimbledon. But unlike Venus, she managed to be seeded, in an 8 field seed no less, even though she did not play the AO. Or the French!

The answer is Chris O'Neil. The 73 Jr AO Champ, she only had a 1-5 record there entering 1978, although though the one year she had won a match, she lost to the eventual winner in Goolagong.

By today's rankings, 2000 pts would make you 20th, but her career high was 80, dooming her to play qualies at slams 2 years after she won.

Nothing specific, other than it apparently isn't as serious as originally feared and that she'll be back soon. So that's good news.

Haha! I actually said "Chris O'Neil?" out loud when I was reading your setup there.

(See, the middle Sunday rests your brain and does a body good.) ;)

Kerry Reid and Jordan, like O'Neil, won when many top stars didn't attend the AO (it fell during the Xmas holidays). At one point in the late 70s, several USA WTA members were at a meeting, at which Chris Evert--by this time a major star--mentioned that she had never won the AO. I think it was Jordan (could have been Reid) who immediately turned to her and deadpanned, "Oh, there's nothing to it!" causing Evert to fall apart laughing.
